Ruby Begonia

Begonias are so interesting.  Their leaves are fabulous.  The greens run from very cool to very warm as does the burgundy and pinks.  This one is a first try.   I've somehow been appointed a 'foster mother' for the plants of a woman who goes to Florida for the winter.

What does it mean to look like me?

I'm really enjoying the use of  newspaper pages.  I bring a variety of pages and quickly choose which one to use depending sometimes on the pose the model strikes.  Maybe the bend of the legs, or some other feature.   It's quick decisions then fast sketching in 20 minutes.

Left Bank Gallery

So happy to be showing work at Left Bank Gallery in Wellfleet, MA.  Left Bank is a well-established gallery that has been in operation since 1971.
Among other things, Wellfleet is famous for it's oysters.   Lucky for me I spent last winter 'hooked' on painting oyster shells.  Here are a few of the 7 pieces.

As Close As Mortals Come to Heaven

Our figure model called out sick today, so when this occurs we sit for each other.  Today I brought several pages from my neighbor's Sunday NYTs.  They published extra Arts sections so I had plenty.  I'm really enjoying these quick sketches on newsprint, especially when there are words and images.  I'm going to explore this until I don't..

Singers gotta sing, dancers gotta dance...

The 18th anniversary of 9/11.  We remember, we reflect, and our lives go forward.  On the way to the Wednesday figure drawing session I picked up the Boston Globe and carried on  connected to that soul-crushing morning.

Dune Majesty in Truro, MA

Mostly during summer vacations for nearly 30 years I've been spending time in Truro, MA and have walked along Route 6A on those mornings.  The views and light have never gotten old. I've done a few paintings from and around this particular area.  This is the latest.

Pucker up, toots!

This little still life of lemons was so much fun.  I put them on a sheet of aluminum foil and had fun trying to keep my head still because every little movement made different reflections!   I've set up still life on foil before and it's always crazy.

Bristol Harbor Before the Wind

I loved the color of that railing against the water so I made it the 'star of the show' sort to speak.  It was a glorious morning, quiet and still, right up until the wind came up and changed EVERYTHING!   Hahahaha, wind, bugs, heat, and sun are all part of painting 'in the wild'.  Ha!

Acushnet Saw Mill Pond

This is a quiet area formerly the Acushnet Saw Mill property in Acushnet, Massachusetts.  It's been transformed into a public area with a running stream, wooden bridge, and look-out platforms.  It's lovely with songbirds, vocal bullfrogs, swans, and a variety of other wild things.

Fertility Goddess

I love figure drawing and painting.  I'm so glad there is so much interest in it again in the past few years.  There's so many groups that meet and share model costs.  There's a group every day somewhere.

Iris Season

Great to get out in the warm weather.  I'm part of a great group of painters that meet each Monday at different locations to paint outdoors.  Sometimes very generous people allow us to paint on their private properties, as was the case for this one.  Irises are one of my favorites and they don't last long.

Full House - Irises over Peaches

I've been working on this one on and off over a long period of time.  I think I'm done.  I'm thinking of entering it in a springtime show called "Blooming"   We'll see.

Oyster Shells #16

More of the oyster shell series.
If the light is strong enough it shows through the thinnest part of the shell
a little like stained glass
